The remote archipelago of Haida Gwaii, formally known as the Queen Charlottes, lies 80 miles off British Columbia's northern coast. In this other-worldly place, lush green moss hangs from giant Sitka spruce, and ravens' and eagles' calls break the stillness of the deep forests. As we paddle through the intricate straits and channels of Gwaii Haanas National Park, orca and humpback whales glide by, sea lions watch us from their rocky haul-outs and gulls, petrels and tufted puffins wheel above dramatic sea cliffs.
This is the traditional territory of the Haida, a proud people whose powerful presence and history strongly resonate throughout the islands. During our ten-day exploration we visit their ancient villages sites, marvel at totem poles — some of the last original ones still standing — and set up camp where warriors once beached mighty dugout canoes. We feast on gourmet food prepared by our experienced and knowledgeable guides and, at the end of this magical expedition, enjoy a long soak in natural hot springs with a stunning ocean view!
