Kayak Vietnam!

Exploring Vietnam’s Halong Bay by Kayak
Special 20th Anniversary Expedition

We pioneered Sea Kayaking in Vietnam twenty years ago and it quickly became clear we had discovered the world’s most exotic, dramatic paddling destination: Halong Bay. Back then we thought that within a few years the bay would be flooded with tourists, and indeed some areas have become packed with tour boats and day trippers in kayaks. But luckily, our favourite places remain untouched, far off the beaten path on the outer fringes of the bay.

Kayaking in Halong Bay is like gliding through another world: thousands of vertical islands cloaked in bonsai forests create a maze of calm waterways. The limestone cliffs are riddled with sea caves and we paddle through them to explore hidden lagoons. On the outer islets beautiful sand beaches call to us to take a break. We swim in warm waters and now, as a new addition to this classic trip, we can try out stand up paddle boarding – this is the perfect place to practice! Often there is a haze that bathes everything in a soft light and adds to the mysterious atmosphere. Local people believe that the bay is sacred and that dragon gods still lurk in its waters.

Our ‘Kayak Vietnam’ Adventure takes us to the floating villages of fisherfolk, stopping to chat to children on their way to school in bamboo coracles and women selling groceries from rowing boats. In a beachside temple we witness animistic ceremonies to honor the deities of Halong Bay. Our home in this wondrous water-world is a lovely, traditionally built junk, featuring en suite staterooms, deck areas for relaxing and an experiencing crew, including a fabulous chef who will happily give cookery lessons on request!

Our Vietnam paddling adventure begins in Hanoi, where we staying in a charming hotel, right in the heart of the historic Old Quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next stop is Halong Bay where we board our luxurious mothership and sail into kayaking nirvana. Get ready to be astounded at the shape shifting vistas that unfold before as explore rock gardens, caves and hidden lagoons – and listen out for the dragons!
